B.S. Electrical Engineer ('11)
Based on Gallup research, StrengthsFinder 2.0 is designed to uncover certain key talents -- patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that can be productively applied. These patterns are categorized into 34 broad themes -- such as Achiever, Ideation, and Relator -- and those themes indicate and predict one's innate and unique talents. Those talents, when multiplied by the investment of time spent practicing, developing skills, and building knowledge, can become strengths.
Based on this research, here are my top 5 strengths...
- Ideation (I love creative brainstorming)
- Futuristic (All great products and companies start with a vision)
- Intellectual (Yep, I'm a nerd)
- Includer (I always felt bad for the last pick in playground hoops)
- Learner (Stay curious...every day)
A Few Inspiring Ideas
Certain ideas, words, people, and situations can have significant impact. Here are some unique ideas that have influenced me...
"First with the head, then with the heart"
This is a great story about mental, emotional, and physical toughness, but I really like this quote because I think any success story follows outstanding wit and execution. You need both.
Coach Wooden, one of the winning-est NCAA BB coaches of all time, enacted a rule for his team where players would have to nod or point to their teammates when they made a great pass (assist). I think that says a lot about teamwork and selflessness that is often needed off the court, in life, also.
"Leadership and Management are not the same thing...Anyone can manage. True leaders are givers"
There are hundreds of books written about Leadership, but this one is by far my favorite. It is the perfect blend of philosophical and tactical. Lee Cockerell does an excellent job explaining that Leadership is about serving your people (your team).
"A turkey on a farm thinks he's got the world all figured out until the week before Thanksgiving"
This book has nothing to do with turkeys and everything to do with (un)predictable events. I really enjoyed it because I share the author's skepticism for 100% certainty. I think organizations always need at least 1-2 people that ask "Why?" and "What if?". Problems occur when people assume things will always be the same way they have been.
It's kind of strange that an engineer likes marketing, but I do. Marketing might not be as exact as engineering, but there is still quite a bit of "science" behind marketing. This book might not contain any earth-shattering idea, but it opened my eyes to some basic principles that can be applied to more than just business - communicating a personal brand too!
Cubicolor - Got This Feeling (Music Video)
I love inspiring images and sound that create a sense of adventure in life. This video is a simple, but warm collection of clips.
Coach Jimmy Valvano's ESPY Speech, 1993 (YouTube Video)
This is a great speech. If you haven't seen it already, definitely take a few minutes to watch it now! (There are 3 things you should do every day...)
Dream BIG. Stay curious. Love life.
